Your Career: Are you hurting or helping it?
Things don’t always go according to plan. Sometimes we do things that at the time may not seem to have any negative consequences but in essence some of these things become mistakes and they become so huge that the damage is permanent. With the global recession that is so ongoing, it is becoming increasingly difficult to take anything at work casually; with a minor mistake, you may even become a victim of unnecessary layoff or pay reduction etc. No one feels completely safe with the constant threat of downsizing looming over our heads all the time. Additionally competition has become so fierce that it is becoming very hard to slack or even take time off. Below you will find some things to avoid and tips to help enhance your career rather than affecting it adversely.
Lack of proper time management
Managing your time according to the work load you have is the first step in ensuring you are moving toward enhancing your career. The better you are at time management, the more you will be able to accomplish and eventually improve your standing as an employee. Consequently, you give less chance to your boss to raise his/her finger at you. Constantly keep a check on your time management skills in order to increase your credibility and standing
Lack of skill to deal with other employees
Your relationship with your coworkers, bosses and clients and customers is of utmost importance in developing and enhancing your career. No one likes to work with a person who is not friendly and causes difficulty with everything. Once you give a negative vibe you may cause others to stay away from you or ignore you and talk bad about you behind your back. This may lead to an unpleasantness with you and may disrupt the office environment. In such circumstances, if someone should complain about you, you are at a greater risk of losing your job. Lack of team spirit may also lead to similar results so its best to keep your spirits high and maintain a good attitude while at work. Keep in mind also, that it is very easy to blame others and not take responsibility for anything that may go wrong. That is also a classic way people make enemies instead of friends and find themselves at greater risk of losing out on enhancement opportunities and career development.
Difficulty handling pressure situations
In today’s globalized, competitive, cut throat business world, there is no place for scared individuals that are unable to handle pressure situations or multi-tasking. If you are unable to do either of the two things, you are not an asset to the organization you work for and could be at a greater chance of losing your job. As an asset to the company, you must be able to complete your work within time, meet all deadlines and stay calm while doing all this. If you panic while doing a project or start delegating too much work on others , you may come into your bosses eyes, and not in a good way.
Considering yourself irreplaceable
If you think you cannot be replaced, think again. No person is irreplaceable in the corporate business world. All it takes is one mistake and/or bad attitude and you are done in. even very hard working employees that may start to show a bad attitude could be replaced before they realize it. No one is free from error, however. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone has flaws and weaknesses. But never let that turn you into an arrogant person because that is what triggers downfall.
Making unnecessary excuses and consequently failing to deliver
When you can not deliver what you are expected you, you are immediately labeled in competent. Likewise, if your boss come to you with an assignment at the end of the day and you make excuses just to get out of it, you are making yourself highly susceptible o being laid off. Never think that your superiors are fools and are unable to distinguish between a real problem and a lame excuse. So keep your excuses to a minimum and do not try to use them as a tool to get out of work assigned to you or soon you won’t have any work left to do.
Having outdated skills
If you think you can accomplish the same amount and quality of work without updating your skills or improving yourself , then you may find yourself in deep waters. As mentioned before, no one is irreplaceable, so if you want to be better than those around you, and want to improve your chances of career enhancement, you need to constantly keep improving yourself. Not updating your skill sets is the most common mistakes that the employees are making nowadays. Everyday new technology and software is being introduced and every new batch of fresh employees is more adept to them than the ones before them. Don’t be left behind.
