How to Make Yourself Indispensable at Work

The best way to ensure that your chances of being laid off are at a minimum is to go to every limit to make yourself indispensible at work. While it is true that no one is completely indispensable, there are certain things that you can do to make yourself a valuable and dependable employee so that your higher ups are forced to think twice before they decide to let you go. Here are some tips that you can incorporate in your daily routine to reduce the chances of you getting fired in the next spree of lay-offs.

Hard work and initiative always pays off

When you are on payroll, you are expected to give it your maximum. Hard work is the best way to ensure you are of value to the company. If you do your share of work diligently and with keenness and interest, then you are developing yourself as an asset to the company you work at. That way you are reducing your chances of losing your job when the company may face tough times. Take initiative, be aggressive and efficient. You are bound to become an asset that your employer would wish to safe guard. Nobody appreciates an employee who sits around waiting to be told what to do next and then accomplishes only the given task. Be active and take every opportunity that comes your way.

Take responsibility

Take responsibility for the good and for the bad if it should happen. When you do so, you are portraying your sunny side. You are in essence telling your employer that they can count on you. You are increasing your chances of being promoted and reducing your chances of being laid off or fired. At the end of the day, you must think of ways to improve the output of your department in order to impress your managers.

Work together not alone

Being able to work with others makes you a team player and a definite asset to the company you work with. The more you can work with others means your ability to give a positive impression about your company increases. The more people like you, the more they like to work with you and consequently you can accomplish more. Choose to be an integral part of any team and be responsible for the work allotted to you. Work in such a manner that your team and your managers start depending on you and start considering you indispensable. Mission accomplished!

Optimistic attitude

Be positive. Be optimistic. Positivity rubs off a lot more than negativity. You can get a lot  more done with being positive. It takes up less energy and also triggers good mood around you. Whatever happens, try to stay calm and focused. Maintaining a positive attitude in workplace is essential in proving your worth. Don’t panic or get upset with small things that don’t go according to your liking. If you can accomplish your tasks on a rough day with a smile on your face, you will definitely get noticed by your superiors and will certainly make a good impression.

Improve your skills & visibility

Always work on developing your skills and moving yourself in the eyes of your employer. Make sure that you let your superiors know that you are willing and available to help whenever your expertise is needed. This will make you a valuable resource, and an indispensable person within the organization. While it is important that you do your work with honesty, dedication and interest, it is more important that you make people aware of your achievements and expertise without being pompous and showy.

Be flexible

Make sure that you can be flexible enough to adapt to change easily. Due to the ongoing economic crisis many companies are constantly making serious alterations to save resources and be more productive and cost effective. If you cannot go with the changes and do your best to ensure a smooth transition, sooner or later your superiors will start considering you a burden for the team and you may be at a greater chance of being replaced.
